It Wasn’t Me, And That’s the Problem - Part 1

Every election cycle in St. Maarten, we hear the same declaration: “The children are the future.”
It is the most recycled sentence in our political vocabulary repeated in manifestos, shouted from platforms, and printed boldly across campaign banners. But when the time comes to act, the refrain changes. “It wasn’t me.”
Scholarships are denied based not on merit, but on connections. Fields of study are dismissed because they are not on someone’s “priority list.” Imagine telling a young person that becoming a mechanic, electrician, or technician is not important enough to deserve national investment. Then imagine acting surprised when that same young person, left idle and unsupported, struggles to find direction and end up on a scoter robbing Jewelry stores.
We send students to NIPA, yet our labor market hesitates to fully recognize their certifications. We produce graduates from our own university system, yet their qualifications are quietly undervalued. What message does that send? That ambition is conditional? That opportunity depends on who your family is? Get NIPA and USM accredited!
The Ministry of Education cannot continue to operate on slogans and Podcast. The August 2024 election is no longer new. Governance is not rehearsal. If leaders were not ready to govern, they should not have stepped into the arena. What are the tangible results in Parliament? What measurable progress has been delivered within the Ministry?
Leadership requires more than visibility. It requires competence. It raises a serious question: why appoint cabinet members who consistently seek advice from qualified professionals, yet fail to formally empower those same professionals? If expertise is constantly outsourced informally, why not institutionalize it?
We must also stop the convenient political deflection. For years, the narrative has suggested that external forces are “pulling the strings.” Yet since 10-10-10, who has occupied parliamentary seats? Who has been appointed as ministers? Accountability begins at home.
Nepotism disguised as loyalty has quietly become normalized. “Keeping it in the family” may be humorous in conversation, but it is destructive in governance. When appointments appear rooted in familiarity rather than qualification, public trust erodes. As voters approach 2026, we must confront an uncomfortable truth: we are not bystanders. We are participants. We place leaders in office. If standards are low, part of the responsibility rests with us.
Why are CVs not publicly accessible for those holding key public positions? Transparency should not be controversial. If someone is entrusted with shaping education policy, their academic and professional credentials should be visible to the people they serve. We would not assign an electrician to draft national economic policy without training. Nor would we ask a policy advisor to wire a building. Yet in governance, we routinely ignore this basic logic.
This dysfunction contributes to a painful reality: many young professionals from Sint Maarten choose not to return home. They perceive limited opportunity, politicized advancement, and barriers unrelated to merit. When international entertainers visit for Carnival, compensation is prompt and generous. Yet when a local graduate seeks fair compensation for professional work, hesitation emerges. Why is investment in imported talent seen as necessary, but investment in local expertise viewed as excessive?
The long-standing claim that others are responsible for our structural challenges loses credibility when locals have governed for decades. At some point, the phrase “It wasn’t me” stops being a defense and becomes an admission of avoidance and guilt.
Quality in education cannot suddenly become a priority only when convenient. Reform requires consistency, courage, and long-term planning. It requires resisting patronage politics and replacing it with performance standards. Who’s really busy with this no one, we are so focus and AI and digital transformation, but the basics are broken beyond measure.
If the children are truly the future, then policy must reflect that belief. Scholarships must be merit-based and diverse in scope. Technical and vocational paths must be respected and integrated into national development strategy. Qualified professionals must be empowered, not sidelined under the guise of who you fuh.
History will judge this era of leadership. Ten years from now, what will be said about those entrusted with shaping our education system? Will it be remembered as a period of reform or a continuation of deflection?
The phrase “It wasn’t me” cannot remain our national refrain. Maybe the problem was never ‘It wasn’t me’ maybe the problem is that it actually was.
In conclusion at some point, someone must say: It is us. And we will fix it. Not just talking about it but striving towards realistic change and not talk about change that isn’t change but disguise as convenience.
