In Good Hands: A Personal Reflection for International Air Traffic Controllers' Day

Sitting on the plane a few weeks ago, I was filled with that familiar, eager anticipation. After being away, all I wanted was to be back home.
As we began our descent, the captain’s voice came over the intercom: due to low visibility, we would be circling and holding. He reassured us that we had plenty of fuel, but an uneasy calm immediately washed over the cabin. Looking out my window, the paradox was striking. Where we were floating, the sky was bright, sunlit, and serene. Yet below us, the weather was telling a very different story.
The entire plane went dead silent. You could feel the collective tension rising in every seat. In that moment of quiet anxiety, a profound sense of gratitude washed over me. I thought to myself: Thank God for our air traffic controllers. We are in good hands.
As we circled, I heard the distant hum of another aircraft in the distance, or perhaps it was just my imagination in the stillness. Either way, I refused to panic. I simply smiled, anchored by the comforting reality that experienced professionals were guiding us through the clouds.
Outside, the mist and fog worsened, swallowing up the sunlight. The pilot instructed us to double-check our seatbelts as we made our final approach. Down through the thick layer of weather we went, until the runway suddenly appeared, followed by a smooth, masterclass landing.
The entire cabin erupted in a roaring round of applause. Turning to those seated next to me, I couldn’t help but say what was in my heart: "Our air traffic controllers are the best in the world!"
On International Air Traffic Controllers' Day, I want to say a deeply sincere thank you, thank you, thank you.
We often take for granted the invisible guardians in the tower who carry the immense responsibility of keeping our skies safe every single second of the day. We honor not only those on shift today, but also the legendary pioneers whose shoulders you stand upon, those who trained you, and the future generations you continue to mentor and lead.
To all of our air traffic controllers: your vigilance, precision, and calm expertise do not go unnoticed. Thank you for always bringing us safely home.
