Enough Is Enough at the Simpson Bay Parking Lot debacle

Isn’t it time for government and police to finally deal with the mess at the Simpson Bay parking lot?

That area has been allowed to get completely out of hand. What was supposed to be a few vending spots has turned into a loud, dark and poorly controlled entertainment strip that now seems to attract more trouble than anything else. Whenever people hear about that area now, the first thought is another fight, another shooting or another serious incident. That alone should tell government that something is very wrong.

Once again, there has been a shooting. Once again, videos are spreading online showing tourists running for their lives and posting about St. Maarten on TikTok. How many more times must this happen before somebody takes responsibility?

Government must tell the public who controls that land, what the businesses there are allowed to do and whether they are operating within the rules. Right now, it looks like anything goes.

The area has expanded far beyond what many people understood it was supposed to be. A rib shack has become a pizza place and possibly much more. Other businesses are holding large events, literal concerts, with loud music pollution, vulgar behavior and crowds that the area does not seem properly set up to handle.

This is not about attacking local businesses. People should be allowed to make money. But making money cannot mean doing whatever you want, however you want, in a public area with no proper control. The place is dark, noisy and clearly not managed well enough. When an area keeps attracting the same kind of trouble, government and the police cannot keep acting surprised.

Simpson Bay is one of the busiest tourism areas in the country. What happens there affects the image of St. Maarten. Videos of visitors running from gunfire do more damage than any tourism campaign can repair. Government and the police needs to clean up the area, inspect every business, check every permit, control the noise, improve the lighting and decide what can and cannot happen there.

Enough excuses. Enough waiting for the next shooting. Deal with the Simpson Bay parking lot once and for all.
