AMSTERDAM--Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten joined thousands of participants and spectators in Amsterdam on Saturday for the annual Canal Parade, using the occasion to encourage young LGBTQ+ people to live openly and confidently as themselves.
The parade, held on August 1, formed part of WorldPride Amsterdam 2026 and featured 80 boats travelling through the city’s canals. This year’s event carried added significance as Amsterdam hosted WorldPride for the first time, bringing together celebrations, public discussions and activities focused on equality and human rights.
“Love is love, just be yourself,” Jetten said, while reminding young people that support is available even when speaking openly about their identity may initially feel difficult.
Jetten described Pride as both a celebration and a continuing call for action. He said acceptance of LGBTQ+ people remains under pressure in the Netherlands and internationally, making public visibility and government support important.
The prime minister also spoke about his own experience growing up and the freedom that can come from no longer hiding one’s identity. Jetten, the Netherlands’ first openly gay prime minister, said diversity should continue to be recognised and celebrated throughout the country.
His participation followed heightened concerns about the safety of LGBTQ+ communities, including recent violence connected to Pride activities elsewhere in Europe and increasing hostility online.
Jetten said governments must take an active role in protecting equal rights and combating discrimination. He also pointed to planned government measures connected to the Rainbow Ballot Box Agreement, including proposed legislation, additional public education and closer cooperation among municipalities and police.
The Canal Parade began at noon near Oosterdok and attracted large crowds along Amsterdam’s waterways. WorldPride Amsterdam continues through August 8 with concerts, street events, discussions and a human rights conference.
