Teen Times members explore Puerto Rico’s culture, history and natural environment

PUERTO RICO--Members of Teen Times recently spent a week in Puerto Rico as part of the organization’s annual summer educational trip, gaining firsthand exposure to the island’s history, culture, traditions and natural environment.

The annual trip is designed to provide Teen Times members, all teenagers, with learning experiences beyond the classroom. It encourages them to explore other communities, understand different cultural traditions and develop a greater appreciation for history, heritage and the environment.

During their stay, the group visited museums, cathedrals and several historical sites in Old San Juan, including El Morro fort. The visits allowed the teenagers to learn more about Puerto Rico’s colonial history, architecture, religious heritage and development over several centuries.

The group also visited El Yunque National Forest, where members experienced Puerto Rico’s tropical environment and learned about the importance of protecting forests, wildlife and natural resources.

The educational experience extended to Puerto Rican food, arts and crafts. Members sampled local dishes and observed how culture and identity are preserved and expressed through cuisine, creative work, architecture and community traditions.

Teen Times views travel as an important part of youth development. Experiencing another country and culture allows young people to broaden their outlook, become more curious about the world around them and better understand the similarities and differences between Caribbean communities.

The annual trip also serves as a bonding experience for members, who often describe Teen Times as a small family. Spending a week together allowed the teenagers to strengthen friendships, develop teamwork and create memories at the close of the school year.

With the summer experience completed, Teen Times is preparing to begin a new school year with additional members and several new initiatives focused on youth participation, learning, community service and personal development.

Founded in 1996, Teen Times is preparing to begin its 31st school year of serving St. Maarten’s young people and the wider community through youth-led initiatives, educational activities and volunteer work.

The organization remains committed to creating opportunities that help teenagers expand their knowledge, develop confidence and contribute meaningfully to St. Maarten.
