Police issue traffic and safety advisory ahead of St. Maarten's busy tourism season

GREAT BAY--The Police Force of St. Maarten (KPSM) is urging motorists, transportation operators, residents and visitors to prepare for increased traffic congestion as the island approaches the busy tourism high season, with Philipsburg and Simpson Bay expected to experience particularly heavy traffic in the coming weeks.
In a public advisory issued Tuesday, October 20, KPSM warned that increased visitor arrivals and activity across the island will likely result in longer travel times and slower traffic movement. The police are encouraging road users to exercise patience, plan their journeys carefully and allow additional time to reach their destinations.
The advisory places particular emphasis on taxi drivers, tour bus operators and other transportation providers, who are being urged to account for possible traffic delays when arranging passenger pickups, excursions and transfers.
According to KPSM, careful scheduling will be essential to ensuring that visitors and residents reach Princess Juliana International Airport, the cruise port, hotels and other destinations on time, particularly during periods of increased traffic activity.
Police are also reminding motorists that improper parking and obstructed roadways can significantly worsen congestion. Drivers are being instructed to use designated parking areas and avoid double parking, stopping in prohibited locations or blocking the normal flow of traffic.
Passenger pickups and drop-offs must also take place in permitted areas without obstructing other vehicles. KPSM stressed that particular attention should be paid to these practices in Philipsburg and Simpson Bay, where traffic congestion is expected to be more pronounced during the high season.
Beyond traffic management, the police are encouraging visitors to remain attentive to their personal safety while enjoying the island.
Visitors are advised to remain aware of their surroundings, keep valuables secured and out of sight, and avoid leaving personal belongings unattended. KPSM also cautioned against leaving valuables inside parked vehicles, as these may attract unwanted attention.
When traveling around the island, visitors are encouraged to use well-lit routes and arrange reliable transportation, particularly when unfamiliar with their surroundings.
KPSM further reminded all road users to comply with police instructions, keep intersections clear and demonstrate consideration toward pedestrians and fellow motorists.
The police emphasized that cooperation from motorists, transportation providers, businesses and visitors will be essential to maintaining road safety and reducing unnecessary disruptions as tourism activity increases.
With the high season approaching, KPSM is calling on everyone to exercise patience and responsibility to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for residents and visitors alike.
