Parliament receives more than 1,300 pages of answers to its 2,500 questions ahead of Budget 2026 debate

GREAT BAY--Members of Parliament have received more than 1,300 pages of responses from government containing answers to over 2,500 questions they submitted to the government in preparation for the public debate on St. Maarten’s 2026 national budget.

The extensive package of information follows the Central Committee meeting on the draft Budget 2026, during which Members of Parliament submitted questions covering the operations, policies, expenditures, revenues and priorities of government.

The answers will now form part of Parliament’s preparation for the continuation of the budget process, which enters a critical stage on Thursday, August 20, when the public debate on the 2026 budget is scheduled to begin.

With more than 2,500 questions answered across more than 1,300 pages, Members of Parliament have been provided with a substantial volume of information to review ahead of the debate. Note should be taken that some MP's are not satisfied with the content of the answers they received.

The responses cover the various ministries and areas of government and are expected to provide MPs with additional details needed to scrutinize proposed spending and government priorities for the year.

The upcoming debate is expected to extend over approximately one week as MPs question ministers, raise concerns, seek further clarification and debate the financial and policy choices contained in the national budget.

The budget process is one of Parliament’s most extensive annual exercises, providing MPs with the opportunity to examine how public funds are expected to be collected and spent, as well as the programs, projects and policy objectives government intends to pursue.

Attention will now turn to the information contained in the responses and how MPs use those answers when questioning ministers during the coming debate.

The proceedings will eventually conclude with Parliament being called upon to vote on Budget 2026, determining whether the proposed national budget receives the approval required to move forward.

With thousands of answers now before Parliament and more than 1,300 pages of supporting information to examine, the Budget 2026 debate is expected to provide a broad examination of government finances, priorities and operations when deliberations begin Thursday.
