MP Wescot-Williams calls for respect, reflection and unity ahead of Flag Day

GREAT BAY--Chairlady of Parliament Sarah Wescot-Williams has extended advance Flag Day greetings to the people of St. Maarten, calling on the population to mark National Flag Day with pride, reflection and respect for the symbol that represents the nation.

Speaking in Parliament ahead of National Flag Day on June 13, MP Wescot-Williams said the occasion should serve as a reminder of national identity, shared responsibility and unity.

“I join in expressing in advance our best wishes to the entire population for our National Flag Day,” Wescot-Williams said.

She recognized the efforts made across the community to create awareness and encourage public participation in activities connected to the national flag. She made special mention of the flag parade organized by Mr. Youmay Dormoy and others, as well as a school visit conducted through the ministry of ECYS earlier in the day on Friday.

According to Wescot-Williams, the energy and enthusiasm shown by teachers and students during the school visits were remarkable. She said this type of community spirit demonstrates how much can be achieved even when resources are limited.

“That is the way we get things done, even when they seem impossible due to limited resources, money and otherwise,” she said.

The MP also thanked those who have been distributing flags free of charge to residents in an effort to encourage more households, schools, businesses and public spaces to display the national flag.

Wescot-Williams said the flag is more than a symbol. It represents the people of St. Maarten and should be treated with dignity.

“The flag represents us, and as such we need to respect it and demand respect for our flag and all it represents,” she said.

She encouraged the population to mark Flag Day with pride and unity, while recognizing the importance of teaching young people the meaning of the national flag and the values connected to it.

National Flag Day will be observed on Saturday, June 13. The Flag Day Parade kicks off at 3pm from Walter Plantz Square.
