GREAT BAY--Nation Opportunity Wealth (NOW) Member of Parliament Lyndon Lewis has called for renewed national unity, accountability and a stronger commitment to improving the lives of citizens as St. Maarten commemorates the 16th anniversary of attaining country status within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Reflecting on the historic events of October 10, 2010, Lewis emphasized that the occasion represents not only an opportunity to celebrate the country's constitutional achievements, but also a moment to assess its progress and recommit to the aspirations that accompanied the transition.

"Today, 16 years later, we honour that historic milestone, the generations who paved the way, and the hopes our people continue to carry," MP Lewis said.

The parliamentarian stressed that the promise of 10-10-10 must extend beyond ceremonial activities, political speeches and annual celebrations. He said the true measure of the country's development should be reflected in the quality of life of its people, the effectiveness of public institutions and the opportunities available to future generations.

According to Lewis, residents deserve leadership that listens and responds to their concerns, institutions that deliver essential services effectively, and national progress that benefits communities across every district of St. Maarten.

He emphasized that while the country has made important strides over the past 16 years, recognizing the challenges that remain is essential to building a stronger and more inclusive society.

"As we reflect on our journey, we must have the courage to acknowledge what remains unfinished and the determination to move forward together. Accountability strengthens our country. Unity gives us the power to build it," MP Lewis stated.

The MP also drew attention to the fact that Constitution Day coincides with World Mental Health Day, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the human dimension of national development.

Lewis said that building a stronger country must include ensuring that individuals and families feel supported, valued and heard. He underscored that national ambitions and development goals ultimately concern the well-being of people whose lives, aspirations and challenges should remain central to government priorities.

"Let us remember that a stronger Sint Maarten begins with people who feel supported, valued, and heard. Behind every national goal are human lives, families, and dreams that deserve care," Lewis stated.

As St. Maarten enters its seventeenth year as a country, Lewis encouraged citizens and leaders alike to approach the future with a shared sense of responsibility, recognizing that meaningful nation building requires collective effort, effective leadership and a commitment to delivering results.

He concluded by urging the country to honor the significance of October 10 through actions that strengthen its institutions, improve opportunities and create a lasting foundation for future generations.

"May we honour 10-10-10 through our actions, uphold its promise through our service, and build a Sint Maarten that the next generation will be proud to inherit," MP Lewis concluded.
