CAY HILL--Learning Unlimited Preparatory School (LUPS) successfully hosted the Learning Unlimited Summit 2026 on Monday, November 2, bringing together educators, school leaders, and educational professionals from across St. Maarten and neighboring Anguilla for an extraordinary day of professional learning, collaboration, and inspiration.

Held under the theme "Elevate. Educate. Empower." the Summit marked a significant milestone in educational collaboration on the island. Every school board on St. Maarten was represented, while the participation of educators from Anguilla extended the event's reach beyond the island's shores. This remarkable turnout underscored a shared commitment to strengthening educational practices, supporting teachers, and improving student outcomes across the region.

The summit grew out of a vision by Amissa President, Principal of Learning Unlimited Preparatory School, alongside the LUPS administration to bring internationally respected speakers to St. Maarten and give educators from different schools and school boards time to learn from one another.

Principal President’s vision, determination, and leadership were instrumental in transforming an ambitious idea into a groundbreaking professional development event. Recognizing the importance of providing local educators with access to world-class professional learning, Principal President spearheaded an initiative designed to bring internationally respected educational experts directly to St. Maarten while creating opportunities for teachers and administrators from different schools to learn alongside one another.

What distinguished LU Summit 2026 was not simply the caliber of its speakers, but its commitment to building bridges across educational institutions. For a day, educators from different school boards, backgrounds, and professional roles came together around a common purpose: improving the educational experiences and opportunities available to the children of St. Maarten.

Headlining the event was internationally renowned educational consultant, bestselling author, and transformational school leader Principal Baruti K. Kafele, whose distinguished career has focused on instructional leadership, school improvement, educational equity, and inspiring excellence among educators and students.

A recipient of the prestigious Milken Educator Award and author of numerous influential books on school leadership and teaching, Principal Kafele brought an exceptional depth of experience to the Summit. Through his keynote address and breakout sessions, he challenged educators and school leaders to reflect critically on their professional responsibilities, leadership effectiveness, and capacity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of students.

His message reinforced the importance of purposeful leadership, high expectations, and the profound influence that committed educators can have on school culture and student achievement.

Another featured speaker was Elizabeth Maglio, Director of Professional Learning for the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS), who presented "Designed to Last: Building Teacher Excellence Through Coaching and Feedback."

Drawing upon research and professional learning practices, Maglio explored the critical role of meaningful feedback, professional recognition, and supportive leadership in developing and retaining excellent teachers. Her sessions emphasized strengths-based coaching, constructive professional conversations, and the importance of creating school environments in which educators feel valued, supported, and empowered to grow.

The Summit also welcomed internationally recognized communication, cybersecurity, and digital leadership expert Erik Jan Koedijk, whose presentation, RESET! The Workplace with AI, addressed some of the most pressing challenges facing schools in an increasingly digital world.

Through sessions on Responsible AI Integration and Collaborative Learning, People as the Firewall: Cyber Resilience, and Improving Team Connection and Communication, Koedijk examined how educators and school leaders can navigate technological change responsibly while maintaining a strong focus on human relationships, digital safety, and effective collaboration.

His contributions were particularly timely as schools continue to explore the educational possibilities of artificial intelligence while confronting the growing importance of cybersecurity, responsible technology use, and digital citizenship.

Beyond the featured presentations, LU Summit 2026 offered a diverse program of professional development workshops and interactive breakout sessions addressing teaching and learning, student support, educational leadership, school culture, and innovation.

These sessions encouraged participants to exchange experiences, examine common challenges, and explore practical strategies that could be implemented within their respective schools. The emphasis throughout the day was on ensuring that professional learning translated into meaningful improvements in classroom instruction, institutional leadership, and student success.

Perhaps the most significant achievement of LU Summit 2026 was the spirit of unity it fostered. The representation of every school board on Sint Maarten, together with participation from Anguilla, demonstrated what is possible when educational institutions come together in pursuit of a shared vision.

For Learning Unlimited Preparatory School, the Summit represented more than the successful organization of a professional development conference. It was an investment in the wider educational community and an affirmation that improving education is a collective responsibility extending beyond individual schools and school boards.

As educators returned to their respective schools, the hope was that the ideas, relationships, and professional insights developed throughout the Summit would continue to influence teaching practices, strengthen school leadership, and inspire meaningful collaboration.

During the closing program, Principal President thanked the presenters, the LUPS team, and the sponsors whose generosity helped make the summit possible: The Rotary Club of St. Maarten, Princess Juliana International Airport, Motorworld, Port St. Maarten Group, the Central Bank of Curaçao and St. Maarten, Looking Good SXM, and Art of Time. She described their support as “an investment in our teachers, our schools, and ultimately, the future of our children.”

President closed by returning to a message at the heart of Kafele’s presentations. “You may never know the full impact you have on a child’s life,” she said. She reminded educators that a student may succeed because a teacher believed in them, challenged them, or refused to give up on them.

LU Summit 2026 demonstrated that when educators come together with a shared commitment to professional excellence, the benefits extend far beyond the conference itself, ultimately reaching the students and communities they serve.

Through its guiding theme, Elevate. Educate. Empower., Learning Unlimited Preparatory School has established a compelling vision for what collaborative professional development can accomplish in St. Maarten and throughout the Caribbean.
