Fire Department Gets 16% budget boost, critical equipment expected in early 2027

GREAT BAY--The Fire Department will receive a budget increase of approximately 16 percent in 2027 as government moves to address longstanding challenges involving equipment, staffing, training and operational readiness. Prime Minister Dr. Luc Mercelina announced the increase during his presentation of the Ministry of General Affairs' draft 2027 budget to Parliament on Tuesday.
The additional investment forms part of government's broader commitment to strengthening disaster management and crisis response, one of the Ministry's three strategic priorities for the coming year.
Mercelina acknowledged that the Fire Department has faced structural challenges requiring sustained attention and investment. He indicated that government is taking steps to improve the department's ability to respond to fires, emergencies and other situations that threaten public safety.
One of the developments announced was the procurement of critical equipment for the department. According to the Prime Minister, the equipment has already been ordered, with delivery expected during the first quarter of 2027.
He indicated that the investment should have been made years earlier, but welcomed the progress in addressing an outstanding operational need.
The procurement is expected to form part of a wider effort to improve the department's resources and operational capabilities, although the presentation did not specify the type of equipment being acquired.
Beyond equipment procurement, Mercelina confirmed that preparations for a benchmark study of the Fire Department have commenced.
The study forms part of efforts to examine the department's operational requirements and identify areas where improvements are necessary to strengthen its effectiveness and readiness.
The Prime Minister indicated that operational improvements have already been identified and that government continues to engage with Fire Department personnel and their representatives concerning challenges affecting the organization.
These discussions are intended to support a coordinated approach to resolving longstanding issues and improving working conditions and operational capacity.
The government recognizes that equipment investments alone will not resolve the department's challenges. Attention must also be given to personnel, appropriate training, organizational requirements and the resources needed to maintain emergency response capabilities.
The proposed Fire Department budget increase comes as the Ministry of General Affairs places renewed emphasis on disaster preparedness and crisis management.
Mercelina identified disaster management and crisis response as one of the Ministry's three principal policy priorities for 2027, alongside strengthening government capacity and advancing national development through strategic partnerships.
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of preparing emergency services before disasters occur, rather than waiting until a crisis exposes weaknesses in personnel, equipment or operational systems.
For St. Maarten, where emergency services must be prepared to respond to hurricanes, fires and other incidents, maintaining a capable and properly equipped Fire Department remains an essential government responsibility.
The planned improvements are intended to strengthen both the department's ability to carry out its duties and the safety of firefighters and the public they serve.
Mercelina made clear that the additional funding and equipment procurement are part of a broader effort to address structural deficiencies within the Fire Department.
While the 2027 budget provides for increased resources, continued attention will be required to ensure that staffing, training, equipment and organizational improvements are maintained over time.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed government's objective of establishing a Fire Department that is adequately staffed, properly trained, equipped with the necessary resources and prepared to protect residents and property.
The 16 percent budget increase, benchmark study, ongoing consultations and expected delivery of new equipment represent the measures outlined for the department as government moves into the 2027 budget year.
