Court grants permission to prosecute MP Lyndon Lewis, who vows to defend himself

GREAT BAY--Member of Parliament Lyndon Lewis confirmed on Wednesday, October 28, that the court has granted the Public Prosecutor’s Office permission to proceed with its criminal case against him, following a hearing held on October 6. Lewis responded to the ruling by declaring his confidence in the judicial process and emphasizing that the court’s authorization to prosecute does not constitute a finding of guilt.
In a public statement issued following the decision, Lewis explained that the Prosecutor’s Office was required to obtain the court’s permission because of his status as a sitting Member of Parliament. He maintained that the ruling represents a procedural step allowing the case to move forward, rather than a judicial determination concerning the allegations against him. The MP said he welcomes the opportunity to address the allegations formally and present his defence before the court.
“I face this next stage with confidence and resolve. The court’s decision is permission for the case to proceed, not a finding of guilt. I welcome the opportunity to respond to the allegations through the judicial process and present my defence,” Lewis stated.
Despite the development, Lewis made clear that he has no intention of allowing the legal proceedings to distract him from his parliamentary duties. He reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people of St. Maarten and said he would continue carrying out the responsibilities entrusted to him as an elected representative. His statement emphasized continuity in his parliamentary work as he prepares for the next stage of the legal process.
“My commitment to the people of St. Maarten remains firm. I remain focused on my responsibilities as a Member of Parliament and on the work the people have entrusted me to do,” he said.
Lewis also expressed appreciation to those who have continued to support him throughout the matter, while pledging to approach the proceedings with respect for the justice system. “I thank everyone who continues to stand with me. I will approach these proceedings with dignity, determination, and respect for the rule of law,” he concluded.
The statement did not specify the allegations to be addressed at trial or provide a date for the commencement of proceedings. The court’s authorization allows the prosecution to move forward, while the question of criminal responsibility remains to be determined through the judicial process.
